NEWS RELEASE
The equine members of Canada's 2008 Olympic team will be decked out in gear designed by an Abbotsford woman.

"We were just so excited to be a part of the Games," says Snugrugz apparel owner Vicky Royston. "We're just a small company, and this is great for our reputation." The Canadian horses will be wearing a red two-layered dress sheet made from polar fleece and lined with Coolmax fabric that wicks away sweat. The specially designed covering will be used to keep the horses warm and their muscles relaxed before and after events.

Royston said her gear is different from the standard blankets found in tack shops because it is custom-designed for each horse and rider using technologically advanced fabrics.

"It's what humans wear," she said.

Originally from England, Royston and her partner, Trevor White, began attending local horse shows a few years ago. They noticed many Canadian riders simply wore coloured T-shirts to distinguish themselves from other riders.

"In England, there was much more variety. It's all about wearing your colors and your horse wearing your colors," she explained.

When people asked about her own gear, Royston began taking orders and sewing them blankets. Her business has grown; she now has another Abbotsford company, Changes Apparel, to do the sewing work.

Royston said she does not plan to attend the Olympics with the team.

"I have three kids under 12, so I just don't think it's going to happen," she said.

Equine Canada president Al Patterson said he was pleased to have Snugrugz continue its support of the equestrian team. Royston also provided blankets for the 2007 Pan Am Games.
